Frank Dindl is a mechanical engineer and a prolific inventor with the United States Army. Among his 25 patents is a polymer-cased 5.7mm cartridge that is 60 percent lighter than its conventional brass equivalent and can operate at higher pressures. For a year, Dindl carried in his pocket the inert models of both types of cartridges to show to people when he was seeking funding to develop the technology. Dindl works at the Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. (JESSE GLASS)
