Capt. Serena Simeoli, a Marine with the Female Engagement Team (FET), 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, hands a candy to an Afghan child, in celebration of New Year's Eve at Fort Pickett, Virginia on Dec. 31, 2021. Approximately 1,300 service members are spending the holidays at Fort Pickett in support of Operation Allies Welcome. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
