Andrew Tompkins, a mortarman with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), dons a life preserving unit for a Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel (TRAP) exercise aboard the USS America (LHA 6), Philippine Sea, Jan. 26, 2022. Simulating events like personnel recovery allows the MEU to remain consistent as a quick-response force in readiness. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
