Langley researcher Robert T. Jones was the first American aerodynamicist to identify the importance of swept back wings in efficiently achieving and maintaining supersonic flight. Robert T. Jones used the Lorentz transformation (i.e., a Mathematical relation connecting the space and time coordinates of an event) to solve the critical problem of wing sweep in supersonic aerodynamics.
