220302-N-JO245-1042 PRUDHOE BAY, Alaska (March 2, 2022) – Bruce Billian (right) a chief scientist, and Tyler Brant, an engineer, assigned to Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic, pose for a photo in front of commercial satellite communications equipment in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Billian and Brant tested the gear, which utilizes proliferated low-earth orbit satellite constellations, in northern Alaska’s extreme cold before moving it up to Ice Camp Queenfish during the U.S. Navy’s Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2022. Ice Camp Queenfish is an encampment built on an ice floe 160 nautical miles off the coast of Alaska in the Arctic Ocean. ICEX 2022 is a three-week exercise that allows the Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic, increase experience in the region, advance understanding of the Arctic environment, and continue to develop relationships with other services, allies and partner organizations.
