Sgt. 1st Class Zachary A. Williams, an infantryman assigned to 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, stands with Command Sgt. Maj. Adam Nash and Maj. Gen. David Hodne, the senior leaders of the 4th Inf. Div. and Fort Carson, after winning the Staff Sgt. Marcario Garcia Leadership Award for exceptional leadership, dedication and commitment to excellence in the 4th Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Carson, Colorado, March 8, 2022. The award was named for Medal of Honor recipient, Staff Sgt. Marcario Garcia, the acting squad leader of Bravo Company, 22nd Infantry, during the allied invasion of Normandy in November 1944, who was wounded in battle and refused medical evacuation. He continued to defeat the enemy until his unit’s objective was completed. Only then he did he accept medical care. Williams was one of seven leaders across the division to be nominated for the award and had no idea he was on the list, let alone the winner, until he was at the ceremony. (U.S. Army photo by Spc.
