Photograph taken from cockpit window of NASA's 757 research aircraft during flight demonstration of airport capacity and safety enhancement technologies at Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport in August 1997. As the 757 approached the runway, computer-generated graphics outlined the correct runway and its precise location on a "head-up display" mounted between the pilot and the windscreen. Although not shown in the photograph, the demonstration also included a "head-down" moving map display that showed the aircraft's location on the runway and taxiway system, as well as the location of all other active aircraft. The flight demonstration was conducted under the joint NASA-FAA low visibility landing and surface operations (LVLASO) program, which is managed at NASA Langley. The technologies demonstrated will allow an airline pilot to safely approach a runway for landing, roll-off and taxi in any visibility.
