Extravehicular Activity (EVA) 1 on Flight Day 4 to service the Hubble Space Telescope on this second servicing mission (HST SM-02). Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) suited astronauts Mark Lee and Steve Smith work on the telescope. Smith, standing on the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) Manipulator Foot Restraint (MFR), and Lee (red stripes) connect the new Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) in its +V2 aft shroud bay; the old Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) is stowed temporarily on the ORU Carrier (ORUC) aft fixture (038-49). Smith, standing on the RMS MFR is maneuvered over the Sacond Axial Carrier (SAC) Mulimission ORU Protective Enclosure (MOPE) holding a Power Ratchet Tool (PRT) and the NICMOS cryo vent cover; Lee still works in aft shroud (050-56). Frames 038-40, 044-45 and 050-51 are unusable due to shuttle failure.
