Cowbirds caught in a trap May 16, 2022, at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, Texas.
Cowbirds, which are considered to be nest parasites, i.e. they lay their eggs in songbird nests. When the eggs hatch, the baby cowbirds will push the other egg/nestlings out of the nest or cause the death of the other chicks by demanding and receiving more food.
Originally, BHCO followed the massive bison herds that moved through the plains area of the country, so that the harm the caused to the songbird population was dispersed as the bison travelled.
With the loss of the bison population and the fencing of domestic cattle, cowbirds stopped traveling and now stay in certain areas, causing sustained damage to the songbird population in those areas. So during GCWA nesting/breeding season (Mar-May), around ten BHCO traps are set up, in an effort to reduce their population and create a more sustainable GCWA population.
