Jewelry is displayed in the small shop owned by Amal Ahmed Awadh in Hadrhamawt, Yemen in July 2022. Amal uses the skills she learned from USAID to further her small business, which makes seashell-inspired jewelry and handicrafts. She is one of 50 women from the Hadhramawt who have benefitted from USAID initiatives that help women turn their creative passions into successful enterprises through workshops focused on seafood recipes, jewelry-making techniques, marketing, and other business skills. “I had the talent to begin with, but the courses have elevated my skills, the representation of the product, the packaging, and unique design – capturing the essence of Yemeni traditions that can compete with or even surpass the quality of foreign products,” she says. “My capacity and confidence have increased, and I can display my products with pride.” With increased sales thanks to USAID support, Amal was able to hire a woman to help in her shop, allowing Amal to focus her time on designing and making jewelry.
