Community midwife Ashwaq Hassan participates in a USAID-funded training on reproductive, maternal, and child health care in Yemen in July 2022. Ashwaq is one of more than 200 community midwives trained by USAID’s Systems, Health and Resiliency Project (SHARP) to provide essential maternal and newborn health care services to mothers in her community. Her responsibilities include counseling mothers on the importance of breastfeeding. “I see a difference now. The community cares more about breastfeeding,” Ashwaq said. “We educate the mothers and their families about breastfeeding and provide them with accurate advice, best practices of breastfeeding, and how it is vital for the healthy growth of newborns.” Photo Credit: Omar Al-Gunaid, communications specialist, SHARP.
