U.S Army Maj. Gen. Van McCarty, adjutant general for South Carolina, speaks to attendees at a suicide prevention proclamation signing, Sept. 7, 2022, at the Adjutant General Complex Auditorium in Columbia, South Carolina. The signing of the proclamation by the adjutant general proclaims Sept. 7, 2022 as Suicide Awareness and Prevention Day in the South Carolina National Guard, and calls upon all National Guard, civilian personnel and their families to increase their participation in efforts to prevent deaths by suicide, thereby strengthening the National Guard community. Every day, in the U.S., 130 Americans take their own lives through suicide, about 20 of those are veterans. September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness of suicide prevention, treatment and recovery. This year’s national theme is “Creating Hope Through Action”.
