On January 11, 2005, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite captured this image of scores of agricultural fires burning around the Tonle Sap (lake in image center) in Cambodia. Areas where MODIS detected active fires are outlined in red. Burned areas associated with the fires appear dark, purplish brown compared to the surrounding tan landscape. Remaining natural vegetation, including a ring of wetland vegetation around the lake and pockets of tropical rainforest appear deep green.
