An aerial view of the left abutment or “dogleg” of the auxiliary dam at the Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project in Lake Isabella, California, Sept. 14, 2022. The dogleg is a stretch of the dam that curves upstream to meet California State Route 178 on higher ground, minimizing the hindrance to traffic and saving costs during the dam’s construction. Crews are approaching completion of construction work on the project, which includes upgrades to the auxiliary and main dams, service spillway, emergency spillway and a new labyrinth weir. The project is designed to reduce flood risk for downstream communities including Bakersfield.
