    31st Fighter Wing

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – This week’s Wyvern Warrior of the Week is the 31st Communication Squadron Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) Repair Team: Master Sgt. Robert Blevins, Master Sgt. Bryan Szafranek, Tech. Sgt Christopher Oleary, Tech. Sgt Branon Johnson, Tech. Sgt Michael Thrasher, Staff Sgt. John Janulis, and Airman 1st Class Kelly Curtis.

The UPS Battery team spearheaded efforts to resolve a major pain point for the 31st Fighter Wing: they were tasked to produce the way forward regarding general power issues in Building 1442.

During storms, power in Building 1442 drops regularly. Each time it dropped technicians would have to work for two hours or more to get communications services back online. Once commercial power was restored, technicians would then repeat that same sequence to re-establish services to our mission partners. The UPS Battery team identified that the UPS was not bridging the gap between power loss and generator startup. They then dug up historical documentation to draft a Bullet Background Paper that was shared with the 31st FW leadership, USAFE/A6 community and Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AF IMSC). This, along with the continuous outages of mission partner capabilities for our Geographically Separated Units, drove three and four-star attention, giving them the leverage to request a $244K “Critical Unfunded Request” through AF IMSC. The UPS team sourced cost quotes and fast tracked all of the required documentation for approval. The team stayed in constant contact with HHQ, the program office, and the sub-contractors spread across Europe and the US to execute the install in an expedited fashion. This project was estimated to be accomplished in 6 months due to an extreme shortage of batteries, but the team was able to execute sourcing, purchasing, logistics tracking and installation within just one month.

According to leadership the team consistently displays an ability to critically think, problem solve and coordinate with multiple HHQ to chart critical path to success!

Keep doing great things, team! We’re glad you’re part of Wyvern Nation!
