Brig. Gen. David May, Wisconsin’s deputy adjutant general for Air, speaks during an Oct. 1 ceremony to officially rename Volk Field’s lodging and conference center after Maj. Gen. Al Wilkening, Wisconsin’s adjutant general from 2002 to 2008, at Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center. The 205,745 square-foot facility has 1,035 available beds and four conference rooms. In the 2022 fiscal year, Hotel Volk hosted more than 238 units for more than 60,000 bednights.
Maj. Gen. Wilkening retired after 38 years of service to this state and nation. He was widely respected for his strategic vision, which — combined with his focus and drive — laid the foundation for Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center to provide capabilities as the premier Air National Guard training facility in a rapidly evolving global environment. Maj. Gen. Wilkening was highly respected throughout the entire National Guard community and was often a by-name selection to serve on a wide range of councils and committees.
