Extravehicular Activity (EVA) 1 on Flight Day 4 to service the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on this second servicing mission (HST SM-02). Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) suited astronauts Mark Lee and Steve Smith work on the telescope. Dark, nighttime views of Smith (standing on the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) Manipulator Foot Restraint (MFR)) unstowing the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) from the Second Axial Carrier (SAC) Axial Scientific Instrument Protective Enclosure (ASIPE); Lee watches (001-23). Smith and Lee (identified by red stripe) close the +V2 aft shroud doors; the old Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) can be seen temporarily stowed on the Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) Carrier (ORUC) aft fixture (024-25). Smith attaches his Pistol Grip Tool (PGT) to the MFR handrail (026-31) then, with the assistance of Lee, closes the SAC ASIPE door (032-45), and engages the latches (046-54). Lee (identified by red stripe) floats next to the external airlock at the end of the EVA while the legs of Smith float in front of Lee (055-58). Smith straightens up the RMS MFR handrail toolboard (059-63). Light streaks are caused by shutter failure. View STS082-717-029 was selected by the crew to be used in their postflight presentation.
