Pat Harrison, Alaska area manager for Kiewit Infrastructure West Co., delivered remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony for the 16/34 runway extension on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District joined Gov. Mike Dunleavy and representatives from the 673d Air Base Wing, 11th Air Force, 3d Wing and the Eklutna Tribe for the ceremony. Engineers on the mega-project used cutting-edge technology and innovative techniques to design the project. It will require extensive excavation due to the site topography including the movement of 12 million cubic yards of soil, which is equal to 800,000 dump truck loads. If lined up, those trucks would cover the distance from JBER to San Antonio, Texas.
