U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. John Novela is a descendent of the Haida Tribe, a Northwest Indian Tribe that resided in Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. His great uncle George Mather designed and carved large Tsimshiam Totem Poles. Totem poles are monuments created by the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest to represent and commemorate ancestry, histories, people and events. Novela currently serves at I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Gadiel Zaragoza)
