21 Nov 2022- NAS Whidbey Island’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Eric Hanks, awarded the Navy Marine Corps Medal, the highest non-combat award for heroism, to Hospital Corpsman Second Class Anthony Anglikowski for his instrumental actions on a rescue mission for two critically injured hikers in the Olympic National Forest on May 23, 2021. That day, the hikers in question had descended a 45 degree slope on The Brothers mountains when both of them lost their footing and slid down the icy terrain. One of the hikers was unable to arrest their fall and ended up sliding into a deep crevasse.

Upon arriving on scene, the NAS Whidbey Island Search and Rescue helicopter inserted Anglikowski and another crewmember who then traversed the treacherous slope to a rocky ledge where the hikers were located. While ensuring the first hiker was stable, the rescue team was unable get a verbal response from the other hiker. Anglikowski, along with three Jefferson County Search and Rescue personnel, developed a suspension system to rescue the hiker in the crevasse. The descent to reach the hiker was complicated by a snow-pack fueled waterfall that flowed through the recovery scene. At significant personal risk, Anglikowski and one of the Jefferson County team members rappelled into the crevasse to reach the hiker who was, unfortunately, deceased.

Anglikowski’s medical training and mountain rescue expertise were instrumental in carrying out this dangerous mission to rescue the survivor and recover the lost hiker.
