500lbs/1000lbs Club Competition in Baghdad, Iraq

Soldiers in the 801st Field Hospital who are part of Joint Task Force Med 374 competed in the 500lb/1000lb weight lifting competition in Baghdad, Iraq. The rules are, you get three attempts to lift as much weight as you can at three stations; the bench press, deadlift and the squat. Females had to lift a combined weight of over 500lbs, men who weigh less than 165lbs must lift a combined weight of over 750lbs and men who weigh over 165lbs must lift a combined weight of over 1000lbs. Sgt. Justin McCurdy, a 68A Biomedical Equipment Specialist with the 801st Field Hospital, won the competition by lifting a total of 1640lbs. Sgt. McCurdy lifted 420lbs in the bench press, 535lbs with the deadlift and 585lbs with the squat. Sgt. McCurdy also started the Task Force Med 374 Barbell Club, where he teaches proper technique and form while lifting weights in the gym. Starting the club helped encourage other Soldiers to be more physically fit while avoiding injuries from improper form. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Michael Romero/released)
