Sgt Lena Mae Basilone was an Italian American who joined the US Marine Corps Women's Reserve as a field cook. She married GySgt John Basilone before he was deployed to the Pacific theater and killed at Iwo Jima. She never remarried and spent much of her life advocating for veterans' causes. She christened the USS John Basilone, which was launched in her husband's honor (U.S. Navy Graphic by MC2 Zachary Bender).
