U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joshua Hernandez, assigned with the 2-130 Field Artillery Regiment (FAR), poses for a portrait as Army Central's (ARCENT) "Strong Sergeant, Strong Soldier of the Week", at Camp Shivta, Israel, January 24, 2023. Hernandez, a 13J fire control specialist, serves as the section chief for the fire direction center (FDC).
"My grandfather used to say that listening is more valuable than speaking when it comes to mentoring. I've taken this advice to heart and have benefited greatly from listening to my soldiers. Instead of pretending to know everything, I share my knowledge and listen to their questions. This has allowed me to gain insights and solutions from my lower enlisted that may have otherwise gone unnoticed."
After serving alongside the Israeli Defense Forces, Hernandez found further inspiration from the history of Israel. In particular the life of Moshe Dayan.
"The best battlefield is the one that never has to be fought. The best war is the one that is won before it starts. The best soldiers are the ones trained to never have to fire their weapons." - Moshe Dayan, former Israeli Defense Minister. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. David Campos-Contreras)
