This Fort Riley Friday we look a monument on Cavalry Parade field that honors the horse. The inscription on the Civil War Horse statue states: "In memory of the one and one half million horses and mules of the Union and Confederate armies who were killed or wounded or died from disease in the Civil War." The three-quarter sized statue was created in 1996 by artist Tessa Pullan and presented as a gift to the U.S. Cavalry Museum from Major Paul Mellon who served at Fort Riley during #WWII. It was dedicated in 1997 and can be seen in the small courtyard immediately north of the Cavalry Museum.
