This Fort Riley Friday we celebrate the 10th anniversary of opening of the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters, building 580 on Bellavia Way.
Ground was broken on the $50 million dollar facility July 27th, 2006 and the Big Red One opened their new home November 16th, 2007.
The division teamed up with the Kansas City district Army Corps of Engineers, and lead contractor M.A. Mortenson Company, headquartered in Minneapolis, MN for the project. The structure is home to the division command staff. Featuring then state-of-the-art communications technology, the building is equipped with more than 100 miles of telephone and data cables and opened with $1.5 million worth of audio/visual equipment.
"With the ribbon cutting today, it's safe to say that the Big Red One is here to stay," former 1ID Commanding General Robert Durbin said during the ribbon cutting ceremony. "Today we make history."
