This Fort Riley Friday we visit the site of the home and headquarters of Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood overlooking Camp Funston. From high on a hill overlooking the camp, Maj. Gen. Wood commanded a beehive of activity as an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 buildings were constructed to accommodate as many as 40,000 Soldiers who would train to fight in World War I.
Prior to coming to Fort Riley, Wood was Army Chief of Staff. After the war he ran an unsuccessful campaign for the 1920 Republican presidential nomination. He retired from the Army in 1921 and was appointed Governor General of the Philippines in 1922.
The remains of Maj. Gen. Wood's Camp Funston headquarters can still be seen today (upper left.) In these historic photos we see the structure from the west (upper right) and a higher perspective from the east (lower left.) In the lower right photo, we see Camp Funston as it looked from Gen. Wood's headquarters.
