This Fort Riley Friday we visit Sturgis Stadium, a site named for three generations of #Army officers. Col. Samuel D. Sturgis fought in the Indian Wars for 40 years (1846-1886.) His son, Maj. Gen. Samuel D. Sturgis, Jr. served in the Army from 1884-1925. General Sturgis’ son, also named Samuel D. Sturgis, Jr., was a Lieutenant at Fort Riley with the 9th Mounted Engineer Squadron. In 1933, he commanded a Troop that constructed the bowl now known as Sturgis Stadium.
Pictured here (upper left) is Sturgis Stadium (looking west to east) during the visit of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, April 25, 1943. The photo below it (left center) shows how the area appears today from the same perspective. In 1936, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment held a Centennial Celebration at Sturgis Stadium (lower left.) As mentioned, Pres. Roosevelt visited Fort Riley in April, 1943 (lower right).
