This Fort Riley Friday we look at another group of monuments on Cavalry Parade Field that were originally setup elsewhere.

Adjacent to the display honoring the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, sits a collection of markers memorializing Soldiers who served in the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division during Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. There are markers for individual battalions as well as two for the brigade as a whole. They bear the names of those who gave their lives in service to their country.

Like the 3rd Brigade "Dukes", the "Daggers" of the 2nd Brigade can trace their lineage back to May 1917 as it was then Headquarters, 2nd Infantry Brigade of the 1st Expeditionary Division. After fighting in WWI, WW2 and the Cold War, the brigade was inactivated after each conflict. After re-activating in the fall of 1963, the Daggers moved to Fort Riley to take up residence with the rest of the 1st Infantry Division. The brigade moved again in 1996 as the Big Red One relocated to Europe. The 2nd Brigade was located in Schweinfurt, Germany until 2008 when it eventually ended up back here at Fort Riley. The monuments and memorials erected in Schweinfurt over the years were all moved from Germany to Fort Riley in early 2011 and later installed on the area of Cavalry Parade Field adjacent to the Cavalry Museum and Wainwright Hall.
