ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Feb. 17, 2023) Superintendent Vice Adm. Sean Buck delivers remarks during a renaming ceremony held in Mahan Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy. The ceremony announced that the Naval Academy’s academic building housing the political science department and the languages and cultures department will be renamed “Carter Hall” for 1947 USNA graduate, 39th President of the United States, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter. The name change from Maury Hall is a result of the recommendation by the Congressional Naming Commission, which provided recommendations for all Department of Defense items that commemorate the Confederate States of America or any person who served voluntarily with the CSA. Matthew Fontaine Maury, an early oceanographer and one-time director of the Naval Observatory, joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. (U.S. Navy photo by Stacy Godfrey)
