Lewis Brower, whaling captain and lifelong Barrow resident, presents his hand-made traditional ice cellar to U.S. Air Force Airmen from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson during a visit to Utqiagvik, Alaska, Feb. 4, 2023. The ice cellar, made by Brower’s family and generations of whaling captains, is capable of handling two full whales between 32 and 38 feet long. The JBER Airmen were visiting Utqiagvik for a site visit of Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site and to participate in Kivgiq, an ancient Iñupiaq tradition, which unites North Slope communities in a celebration of dance and fellowship.
