The sun begins to rise as a Soldier assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division takes part in a 12-mile ruck march during the Expert Infantryman Badge/Expert Soldier Badge (EIB/ESB) competition March 31 at Fort Bliss, Texas. More than 100 Soldiers from across Fort Bliss took part in the competition trying to earn the coveted EIB and ESB special skills badge. The 1st Brigade Combat Team, "Ready First", 1st Armored Division hosted the competition from March 27 through March 31. The EIB/ESB competition tested Soldiers on a series of rigorous and demanding events and tasks such as the Expert Physical Fitness Assessment, day and night land navigation, individual weapons qualification and familiarization, medical tasks, patrol lanes, and the completion of a 12-mile road march in three hours or less. The EIB/ESB qualification is part of individual training designed to increase Soldier proficiency in the Army Warrior Tasks to increase lethality and unit readiness.
