Smoke rises from a prescribed burn in the western portion of Fort Stewart’s training area April 5. The large plumes of smoke are created by several small ping-pong ball ignited fires that quickly burn together. The balls contain to chemicals that interact to spark a fire and are dropped by helicopter into the forest. It takes one hour to burn 1,000 acres.
