Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Charlie Plumb (right) congratulates USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32) Commanding Officer Cmdr. Brian Sparks following the ship’s commissioning at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme, California, on April 1. Plum was an F-4 Phantom fighter pilot whose jet was shot down over Vietnam in 1967, only five days before he was slated to return home. He spent nearly six years as a prisoner of war (POW), distinguishing himself in underground communications and serving as chaplain in his POW camp.
