GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Apr. 13, 2023) Mr. Andrew S. Haeuptle, right, Director, Navy Staff Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV), observes Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Travis E. Davis, an instructor at Surface Warfare Engineering Schools Command Great Lakes, coaches a student using the Visual Identification Virtual Reality (VIVR) training simulator used in Boatswain’s Mate “A” School during a visit to Naval Station Great Lakes accession training sites. The VIVR is a computer-based system designed to increase the situational awareness of lookout watch standers around the bridge and other strategic points aboard naval vessels, giving students realistic exposure to time-critical decision making on station. The visit included touring facilities and engaged with Sailors at NETC schools for surface warfare, combat systems and advanced swim preparation, including observing the latest in modernized training methods for hands-on and other virtual reality simulations. As the as Director, Mr. Haeuptle serves as the senior OPNAV civilian and coordinates enterprise level efforts across the entire OPNAV staff.
