U.S. Air Force Col. Kurt Muller, 673d Civil Engineer Group commander, discusses the north-south 16/34 runway extension project with Shawn G. Skelly, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness, during a visit to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, May 16, 2023. In her role as the ASD for Readiness, Skelly develops policies and plans, provides advice, and makes recommendations for total force readiness programs, reporting and assessments of readiness to execute the National Defense Strategy. During her visit to JBER, Skelly discussed airframe and force readiness challenges with the 3rd and 176th Wings, and how the extension project for JBER’s north-south 16/34 runway will continue to provide the Wing with the ability to provide air dominance, global mobility, airlift and command and control to combatant commanders.
