Have you known what you wanted to grow up to be since you were young? Spc. Drew Lowe, of Urbandale, Iowa, says he’s known he wanted to be a Soldier for as long as he can remember. A family friend served as a supply sergeant in the Iowa Army National Guard – Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Ben Doyle. Lowe grew up watching Doyle serve in uniform.
“I just kind of fell in love with the Army,” Lowe said.
So, on his 17th birthday with his parents’ blessing, he went to join the Iowa National Guard in 2019. He serves in one of the same units Doyle did back then – Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment.
“A lot of people like to say the Army has two [military occupational specialties] – the infantry and everyone who supports the infantry,” Lowe said, “so I figured I’d be the former.”
Now on his second annual training period outside the state of Iowa, Lowe is enjoying the unique training and Wyoming views.
“We got to shoot the M110 [rifle], which was really interesting,” Lowe said. “The range works great, and the landscape out here is absolutely beautiful.”

Soldiers completed individual and collective tasks at the squad level, to include practicing moving as teams, firing a variety of weapons and conducting air assault movements.
