Retired U.S. Army Colonel Dr. John H. Felix and Margaret Gaukler, president of the Wahine Koa Chapter of the Women Marine Association, cut a cake during a National Flag Day ceremony hosted by the Military Order of the World Wars and the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Oahu Veterans Center, Honolulu, June 14, 2023. Approved by Congress as a National observance on August 3, 1949, Flag Day commemorates the date in 1777, in which the first design of the national flag of the United States of America was approved.
