An F-16 Fighting Falcon in the markings of the 100th Fighter Squadron, the historic "Red Tails" of the 187th Fighter Wing, touches down at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Michigan, on June 29, 2023. The aircraft was transiting through Selfridge on the way back to its home base following participation in exercise Air Defender 2023, a major combined arms exercise in cooperation with NATO in Europe.
Although this F-16 retains the livery of the "Red Tail Flyers" from WWII in homage to the Tuskegee Airman, the first African-American combat fighter pilots in the U.S. military, it is now assigned to the 120th Fighter Squadron, the “Redeyes”, from the Colorado Air National Guard's 140th Wing.
The 100th Fighter Squadron "Red Tails" of the 187th Fighter Wing, transferred their last operational F-16 to other units on April 21, 2023. The aircraft will soon be repainted, making sightings of these interesting and historic markings worthy of note. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Tom Demerly)
