A Mk 124 signal flare is ignited as part of the training evolution at the Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI) headquarters building aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola, June 22. The Mk 124 was developed to give personnel operating in a marine or survival situation the ability to signal rescue crew day or night with either smoke or flame signals. The smoke signal shown here is intended for daylight hours in open terrain to give the survivor the best chance at possible of recovery. Periodically personnel must undergo live refresher training to ensure proper deployment and use of their survival equipment. With a student throughput exceeding 14,000 students annually the staff and instructors at NSTI also undergo training to ensure they are using the proper techniques to train students that pass through the Aviation Survival Training Centers (ASTC) and out to the Fleet. NSTI, a detachment of NMOTC, specializes in training the pilots, aircrew, and service members who support other specialized communities in survival skills and technique to survive aviation emergencies. Students and service members who complete training and courses will be equipped, with an understanding of stressors placed on the body, the rigors of egress and techniques for survival in situations of hostile and austere environments.
