Maj. Kyle Konkolics, 71st Special Operations Squadron safety chief, prepares to board a CV-22 Osprey aircraft May 10, 2023, at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Konkolics received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic role in a rescue mission of an American hostage in Africa in October 2020. The successful operation was the longest distance hostage rescue conducted during night in the Department of Defense history and was completed within 48 hours of their initial notification.
