SAN DIEGO (Aug. 2, 2023) Senior Enlisted Advisor to the U.S. Navy Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Command Master Chief Matt R. Harris, shares a laugh with Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Southwest Nuclear Officer Recruiter Lt. Omar S. Bailey at the Navy recruiting tent during the 26th International Student Robotic Submarine (RoboSub) competition co-hosted by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific Aug. 2, 2023. Navy Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa M. Franchetti, a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) enthusiast, visited RoboSub 23 to witness the competition and meet with students and competitors. This year’s event features 35 student teams from the U.S., Canada, India, Singapore and Bangladesh building robotic submarines designed to overcome simplified versions of challenges relevant to the autonomous underwater vehicle field. NIWC Pacific and ONR volunteers support students competing in underwater subject matter areas such as oceanographic exploration and mapping, detecting and manipulation of objects, and pipeline identification and tracking.
