Coast Guard Cutter Healy conducts science missions in Beaufort Sea

Colin Ryan, a researcher working on the Arctic Mobile Observing System project, and Seaman Johnathan Paterson, a crew member with the icebreaker USCGC Healy (WAGB 20), drill into the ice for a science instrument deployment in the Beaufort Sea, Aug. 6, 2023. Part of the science missions included the installation of two major instruments: the Waves, Weather, Ice Mass, Balance, and Ocean (WIMBO) device, a massive weather buoy destined to remain at sea; and a Dynamic Ocean Topography device, collecting sea surface data.
