230809-N-UM744-1002 GROTON, Conn. (August 09, 2023) - Master Chief Petty Officer James Elmstead, chief of the boat for USS Newport News (SSN 750), left, supervises line handlers as the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine gets ready to moor after returning home to Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 following a surge deployment. Newport News is the third Naval ship to be named for the Virginia city and the last second flight submarine in the class. The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Newport News and crew operate under Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) TWELVE and its primary mission is to provide attack submarines that are ready, willing, and able to meet the unique challenges of undersea combat and deployed operations in unforgiving environments across the globe.
