The Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Eric M. Smith passes the noncommissioned officer sword to the incoming Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Carlos A. Ruiz during the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps relief and appointment ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington, August 10, 2023. During his 30-year career, Sgt. Maj. Ruiz served in a variety of billets and completed several overseas deployments including combat operations in Iraq in 2003 and two combat deployments to Afghanistan with 1st Marine Division.
