SAN DIEGO (Aug. 21, 2023) Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Southwest Commanding Officer Cmdr. Keith Bushey congratulates Yeoman 1st Class Jonathan Gruber, from Temecula, California, after surprising him with his change in status to a chief petty officer (CPO) selectee during the command department head meeting, Aug. 21, 2023. Gruber is one of 18 selectees who will participate in a six-week CPO 360 training period with the NTAG Southwest CPO Mess. In the Navy, promotion to be the rank of CPO requires a Sailor to take on the dual role of technical expert and designated leader. The title of “The Chief” carries with it a tradition of knowledge, teamwork and the ability to take charge that began when the U.S. Navy first introduced the rank in 1893. (U.S. Navy photo by Todd J.
