U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. James A. Ryans II, Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region and Retired U.S. Marine, Gerald Hampton President of the Montford Point Marines Association, Chapter 44, participate in an award and honors ceremony at MCRD San Diego, Sept. 28, 2023. The Congressional Gold Medal was presented to Robin Rayford on behalf of her father, Master Sgt. Robert Lee Crittenden, who served in the Marine Corps from February 1946 to March 1965, making history as one of the 20,000 African Americans trained to become Marines at Montford Point Camp, located in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
