U.S. Coast Guard Ensign Luke Monaco, communications officer on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB 20), conducts a communications exercise with the Norwegian Coast Guard Vessel Jarl crew while underway in the Norwegian Sea, Oct. 6, 2023. The communications exercise was focused on using long-range HF communications due to the distance from the two vessels, and HF radios are used for communicating with other vessels and shore stations that are beyond line of sight. The test was successful with the KV Jarl and crew, which means communicating over long distances with a vessel can be used during search and rescue missions, or transmit a distress signal during an on board emergency.
