An F-35 Lightning II test pilot performs a vertical landing (VL) on the wet deck of U.K. aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales (R09) the morning of Oct. 26, 2023. Marine Lt. Col. Michael Lippert was performing VLs and shipborne rolling vertical landings (SRVLs) in the F-35B short takeoff vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the 5th generation fighter jet as flight test continues as part of developmental test phase 3 (DT-3) flight trials. HMS Prince of Wales is deployed to the U.S. Eastern Seaboard for WESTLANT 2023. A Pax River F-35 Integrated Test Force (Pax ITF) team is working closely with the ship's crew to conduct the sea trials.
