An HMS Prince of Wales (R09) aircraft handler walks away as an F-35B Lightning II flown by a test pilot performs a short takeoff (STO) on the U.K. aircraft carrier’s ski jump the morning of Oct. 26, 2023. Marine Lt. Col. Michael Lippert was performing STOs, vertical landings (VLs), and shipborne rolling vertical landings (SRVLs) in the STOVL variant of the 5th generation fighter jet as flight test continues as part of developmental test phase 3 (DT-3) flight trials. HMS Prince of Wales is deployed to the U.S. Eastern Seaboard for WESTLANT 2023. A Pax River F-35 Integrated Test Force (Pax ITF) team is working closely with the ship's crew to conduct the sea trials.
