Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers (from left) Chief Warrant Officer Kelly Malcom, Cpl. Marina Lopez-Melgoza, and Sgt. 1st Class Savannah Bates listen as Illinois State Military Museum volunteer and German Infantry Soldier re-enact Bjorn Ganger of Tonica, Illinois, explains how the German forces were more advanced in chemical warfare with gas masks with charcoal filters. The museum held its annual Great War Encampment on Nov. 4. The event tells the military history of World War I through displays and re-enactments. The museum, on the Illinois National Guard headquarters of Camp Lincoln in Springfield, tells the history of the Illinois National Guard from its colonial roots to modern units.
